The Selection Process
a. Names of eligible juniors and seniors are posted on the Guidance Office window in early September. Students are eligible if they have a GPA of 3.4 or higher. Students should see Mrs. Wadel for a Student Activity Information Form the first week that the names have been posted (the form will also be available for down-load from this web page).
b. All interested students should attend the informational meeting in mid-September. Parents are welcome to attend if they are interested (the date can be found on the Student Activity Information Form).
c. The activity information form should be filled out and turned in by the due date no later than 3:15pm on the date specified! Turn them in directly to Mrs. Wadel in Room #258. It is highly recommended that students turn in your forms early in the event of illness, forgetfulness, etc.
d. A list of all interested students will be forwarded to every teacher in the building and these teachers will rate each student using a scale of 1-4 (4 being the highest and representing the top 10% of students at SJHS) on leadership and character. A score for service will be assigned based on the information submitted on the activity information form. GPA will be representative of scholarship.
e. Mrs. Wadel will tabulate the scores and present them to a faculty council.  The faculty council typically looks at a cut off of 3.7 for character and leadership (however seniors and close scores are evaluated on an individual basis).  It is important to emphasize, that one must be exemplary in character and leadership to be considered for induction.
f. All students who submit an Activity Information Form will be notified regarding induction status (selected, or not selected) in October via the e-mail that they provided on their Form. If a student does not make it into NHS the student may see Mrs. Wadel to receive their character and leadership scores anytime after the inductees are announced.

The National web-site can be found at:  http://www.nhs.us/s_nhs/sec.asp?CID=930&DID=53363

            NOTE:

After induction, to maintain membership, students must adhere to the following:

they must keep their GPA at 3.4 or above, they must consistently represent the ideals of NHS, they must attend brief monthly meetings, they must volunteer for after-school tutoring at least twice a semester, they must participate in one fund raiser, and they must complete an additional 6 hours of NHS sponsored service each year.  During graduation, members are identified by wearing white cords during the ceremony.
