{Upton Orchestra} FINE ARTS AT UPTON Upton Middle School’s Fine Arts Program is one of the hallmarks of our school system. It is so outstanding that 75% of our students participate in band, orchestra or choral. These programs have far-reaching benefits socially and academically for your middle school student. They are a great way to meet friends, learn responsibility, build self-confidence, and improve memorization, reading and math skills. BAND Band is a full-year class offered at three levels – 6th, 7th & 8th grades. As students progress they expand their knowledge of music theory, rhythmic skills, technique and listening skills. Several public concerts are held throughout the year; 7th and 8th graders also perform in a variety of band festivals, where they have a tradition of earning top marks year after year. To learn more, click here. ORCHESTRA Orchestra is one of the benefits of choosing St. Joseph Public Schools. We are one of very few schools in West Michigan that offer 6th, 7th & 8th graders three levels of this full-year class. The ensembles perform several public concerts, and 7th and 8th graders compete in festivals for which they are renowned in the state for superior performances. To learn more, click here. SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA Symphonic Orchestra Club is open to all 7th graders who play an orchestra instrument and is required for all 7th and 8th graders who play stringed instruments. Music is a for-credit class that every 6th grader takes. This 7-week
course helps your child learn music theory, style and history through
the Yamaha MIE (Music in Education) keyboard program. Your child will
also learn middle school Primary and Intermediate level principles and
techniques of singing as well as study renowned composers and do
written reports.
HONORS CHOIR Honors
Choir introduces 6th grade students to a variety of choral literature
and helps to build their self-confidence and cooperative learning
skills. No auditions are required for this non-credit extracurricular
activity that meets one day a week and performs winter and spring

Uptones is a full-year choral class that your 8th grade student may audition to attend. This challenging yet fun course teaches a variety of choral literature, languages and musical skills, and showcases our young peoples’ outstanding talents in public performances and festivals.
