As the certified media specialist at E.P. Clarke elementary, I have the privilege of seeing every student at least once in our six- day rotation cycle. Students come not only with their class, but individually when they need to select or return an item, or work independently on a project.
As a teacher, I am responsible for weekly lessons that support the classroom curriculum and enhance the National Standards for 21st Century Learners developed by the American Association for School Librarians. I also supervise the school newsteam composed primarily of 5th graders. During media center time, students will; listen to new and favorite authors and illustrators of both fiction and informational literature; gain ability to locate material according to library organization methods; learn how to use and evaluate various information sources; develop technology skills for their future; and work cooperatively with classmates in a focused inquiry of a class topic.
I am fortunate to have been involved with education for over 25 years and 17 of those years have been in the St. Joseph Public Schools! Currently, I am a member of the District Technology team, the K-12 Language Arts committee, the District Professional Development Team and serve as Media Center department head. I have been active in MAME, the state organization for Media Specialists and am a Past President of that organization. I have a BA in English from Michigan State University, a Masters degree in ESL from Andrews University, and a Masters degree in Library Science from Indiana University. I have teaching experience at every level from Young Fives to university classes. I have taught in varied settings such as migrant education, adult education and structured education classes in both private and public schools and colleges. Though my background has varied through the years, I am most excited to be a Media Specialist and work at an elementary level where I have the unique opportunity to interact with every child!
Parents play a very important role in the media center -- varying from working behind the circulation desk checking classes in and out of the media center, shelving returning materials, processing new materials and working on two yearly book fairs. If you are interested or just want to stop in and visit, please do!
