Education Focus

This year marks my 9th year at St. Joseph High School and my 14th year of combined teaching experience. I started my teaching career overseas in Germany. In 2004 I received the German-American Fulbright Award, granting me the unique opportunity to live in Germany and teach English in a German Gymnasium – similar to our American high school. After my year abroad, I found my way to a small community in Indiana where I taught both German and English. I then came back to Southwest Michigan, the place I've always called home, to be close to family and continue my teaching career in St. Joe.

I did my undergraduate studies at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, receiving my B.A. in English and German. In 2012, I earned my masters in English with an emphasis in teaching from Western Michigan University.  Both institutions have played an instrumental role in the formation of my pedagogical approach and educational philosophies. What's more, the intellectual communities I've formed from Hope and Western have allowed me to develop and fine tune my craft of teaching English. Since then, I've further developed my craft of writing and teaching with my membership to the NCTE (National Council Teaching English) and attending and presenting at conferences.
