Upton Middle School, 6th grade Life Management students in Mrs. Kubsch’s class have been busy building practical, real-world skills that extend far beyond the traditional classroom walls.
Recently, students tackled the essential life skill of hand-sewing by learning how to sew on buttons. To make the project both fun and creative, students applied their new craft by creating custom emoji keychains and bookmarks. The hands-on project allowed students to practice patience, fine motor control, and practical repair skillss, all while crafting a unique keepsake to take home.
The learning didn't stop in the classroom. To connect school lessons with home life, Mrs. Kubsch introduced a "Home Work BINGO" challenge. Given three weeks to complete the assignment, students were tasked with selecting and completing a traditional BINGO line made up of various household responsibilities and life skill activities.
To complete the project, students didn't just check off boxes, they were required to reflect on each task they completed. To make it a true family effort, parents and guardians also joined in by writing reflections on their student's hard work and participation.
By combining practical classroom projects with family-centered habits at home, Upton’s Life Management curriculum continues to empower students with confidence, independence, and everyday skills they will use for a lifetime.
